We’re thrilled to announce a historic milestone for the Rope Access Industry in New Zealand. For the first time ever, Rope Access Technicians have been assigned their own occupational code and officially classified as a Level 3 Skilled Trade under the new Occupational Codes!
This is a game-changing moment that reflects the skill, precision, and safety required in rope access work and recognizes the value our workforce delivers to construction, maintenance, and infrastructure projects.
Why This Matters
✅ Formal Recognition: The unique technical expertise, safety standards, and professionalism of Rope Access Technicians are now formally acknowledged.
✅ Better Data Collection: With this new occupational code, we can collect industry-specific data, enabling better planning for training, workforce needs, and career pathways.
✅ Career Growth: This recognition strengthens opportunities for apprenticeships, clearer career pathways, and workforce development – attracting local talent and improving residency pathways for migrant workers.
No Immediate Changes for Employers
At this stage, there are no changes that employers or workers need to make as a result of this recognition. If any updates or actions are required in the future, we will communicate them to you as soon as possible.
Earlier Achievements
Our collective advocacy efforts continue to deliver results:
- Scaffolding Recognition: Scaffolding is now formally recognized as a Level 3 trade under the new Occupational Codes. This milestone reflects the critical role scaffolding plays in New Zealand’s infrastructure and construction industries.
- Recent AEWV Changes: The New Zealand government has announced several updates to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) settings to improve processes and support workforce needs.
- Removal of Median Wage Threshold: Effective March 2025, the median wage threshold will be removed, simplifying the hiring process for employers.
- Job Check Streamlining: Employers can now more easily re-use approved Job Checks for multiple applicants, reducing administrative delays and making the hiring process smoother for accredited employers.
SARNZ has been proud to advocate for these changes, which will positively impact industry employers and workers. We remain committed to advocating for improved pathways, streamlined processes, and stronger support for skilled workers in our industry.
Thank You
A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to these milestones – through consultations, sharing insights, and advocating for our workforce. Your support made this possible, and together, we’re shaping the future of the rope access industry.
Closing Line
This is just the beginning – with stronger recognition, better data, and greater opportunities, we’re building a more respected and sustainable future for the Rope Access Industry.
