Summer safety – working through summer

Know how to keep yourself and your staff safe during the summer months, and follow your standard safety checklist.

Your summer checklist

  • As always, Height Safety - ensure you revise this often so everyone in your team is fresh on what they need to do.
  • Powerline Safety - we have gathered a range of links, templates, guidelines, posters and maps into one place to help you with working safely around powerlines, and keeping awareness at the forefront.

Sunscreen - Protect yourself from UV rays and melanoma. Make sure you apply the recommended amount, apply before you head outside, and reapply often - once a day won't cut it. Watch out for titanium dioxide or zinc oxide sunscreens that can damage roofing materials, including auto finishes and pre-painted cladding surfaces. This damage is irreparable, so prevention is the only defence. For more information contact the material supplier.
Heat protection - regular breaks, stay hydrated and don't push yourself too hard.
Hydration - Keep a bottle at your side and sip often. Replenish your electrolytes too.
Hat - Keep your head and neck covered, to protect from sunburn and sunstroke. Grab a pair of glasses too, and keep those UV rays at bay.
Shirt - Keep covered to protect your skin. Wearing sunscreen is needed for exposed areas, but covering up is still one of the best ways to protect your skin. Make sure it's a thick fabric, has a sun protection rating, and doesn't have a knit or style with gaps in it.
Fatigue - Be mindful of your energy levels during the day. Take regular breaks, stay hydrated, and don't push yourself when you need a rest. Rotate tiring tasks like working on tough machinery.
